Kentucky is one of the two most difficult states for a former felon to get their voting rights back in. 186,000 Kentuckians can’t vote because of these laws – including 1 in 4 African Americans.

We think that after someone has served their time, they should be given back their right to vote – because that’s the fair thing to do and because it make’s Kentucky’s Democracy stronger.

Dr. Vershawn Ashanti Young writes about the African American experience post Jim Crow with specific attention to class, sexuality, urban education, and politics. He is an associate professor in UK's Department of English. He takes an interdisciplinary approach to his work, blending three interconnected areas into a genre he calls performance-rhetoric: communication, literature, and performance.

A native of Chicago, Dr. Young holds master’s degrees in both performance studies and educational administration, and a doctorate in English.

Wise has spoken in 48 states including education institutions such as Harvard, Stanford, and the Law Schools at Yale and Columbia, along with various community groups around the nation. Wise has provided training nationwide on how to combat racial inequities. Wise is the author of:

In recognition and honor of Dr Martin Luther King's Birthday, Transylvania University Garden Club in partnership with United Way, Sustainable Communities Network and other community groups offer this Kick-off event for the GROW LEXINGTON community garden season. Volunteers will work together to construct and assemble 2 bean trellises, 2 tomato cages, 30 hand-made row markers and 10 starter planters for 10 community gardens in Lexington. All materials and tools for construction will be provided for volunteers. Bring a screwdriver to help with assembly. Community gardens selected will take home the constructed items for their gardens.

You are invited to join us in celebrating Martin Luther King Day on Monday, January 18. Lexington Rescue Mission will be hosting a service from noon to 1 p.m. at Douglas Park on Georgetown Street. Guest speakers will include State Senator Kathy Stein, State Representative Jesse Crenshaw and other local leaders.

Following the service, volunteers will march to Booker T. Washington Intermediate School for a beautification project. This will include cleaning the gymnasium's carpeted playing surface and an adjoining classroom. Additional volunteers are needed to assist with reorganizing the Lexington Rescue Mission Thrift Store at 720 Bryan Avenue.
