DIRECTIONS:

The 'X' indicates the place where we suggest attendees enter the Young Center from North Broadway. The entrance is near the pedestrian crosswalk that is just south of Fourth Street as you travel north on North Broadway (a yellow light is often flashing at the cross walk). Parking. Suggested parking lots are shaded in blue on the 2D map. These include:

• Along the semi-circular drive that surrounds the ‘T’ on the other side of Broadway from the Young Center.

• On the left, just north of Kenilworth Court, as you travel farther north on Broadway

• In the small lots around the Warren Rosenthal Residential Complex that are on the right was you head west on West Fourth Street.

Exhibitors: The best place to unload your exhibits is behind the Young Center (on the map, it is on the opposite side of the building from the 'X'). While it's not shown on this map, there is a driveway and parking BEHIND the Young Center. You can drive in there, loop to your right around the parking circle, and come alongside the Young Center (now on your right). There is a ramp by a door that is the most direct route to the hall where we are holding the fair.
We will have signs and volunteers staffing that door to help you bring your materials in and leave them near the spot where you will set up. You can park your car after unloading.

The Fair & Cate Fosl's Presentation are free & open to the public

Supper: A delicious vegetarian meal.  Vegan & vegetarian choices will be available.

$15 - 50 Adults (12 & up) - Sliding scale according to ability to pay.

$10.00 Students & Low Income.

No charge for children (12 and under)

In a sliding scale you pick the amount.  We expect that many people will elect $20, which is our break-even cost.  Some persons will be able to pay more to help us subsidize children’s, low income and student tickets.  We annually lose $$ on the dinner, but our goal is community-building, not fundraising.  No one should stay home because of inability to pay  - if you know someone who cannot afford a penny – tell us.  We want them to be able to participate.  The amount of the ticket over $20 is a tax-deductible contribution to the CKCPJ.

Act now.  To reserve a ticket register online by clicking here or contact Richard Mitchell at (859) 327-6277.  The deadline for reservations was 5 p.m. Wednesday March 2.  As of 3/3 we have 125 registrations.  If you act quickly, we will still accept your reservation.  When you contact us, please tell us how many persons will be in your party.  If you make reservations, you can pay at the door.

Join us as we gather to rededicate ourselves to working for a more sustainable, just, and peaceful world.

Program

Our speaker is Cate Fosl, a historian and the author of Subversive Southerner: Anne Braden and the Struggle for Racial Justice in the Cold War South and co-author of Freedom on the Border: An Oraln History of the Civil Rights Movement in Kentucky.  Dr. Fosl is an Associate Professor at the University of Louisville, where she also directs the Anne Braden Institute for Social Justice Research. Dr. Fosl will be speaking on the topic: “Beyond the Oppression Olympics."  Fosl summarizes her theme as follows: “In the 1980s, U.S. justice struggles were held back by internal divisions and even competition over which ‘ism’ (racism, sexism, militarism, etc.) should take priority. I’ll outline that history and use a few recent local examples to discuss its transformation into more effective coalition-building and ways of thinking about different systems of oppression more synergistically or intersectionally.”  Cate's presentation will be followed by a lively Q & A session led by Transylvania students. 

Tables at Networking & Resource Fair

At 5 p.m. come for our Networking & Resource Fair.  A wide variety central Kentucky organizations be present with their displays, brochures, etc.  Join us as we network with members of our community who are working for peace, a restored planet, and social justice.  Classical guitarist Michael Fogler will play during the Fair.

CKCPJ Annual Peace Dinner, Sunday, March 6, 5-8 pm

Please register to attend the Central Kentucky Council for Peace and Justice's annual Peace Dinner and Resource Fair.  This year's gala event takes place on Sunday, March 6th at Transylvania University, in the W. T. Young Campus Center (on the southwest corner of 4th and Broadway). There is plenty of parking (Download PDF file of map showing Parking@Transy-Mar6-2011).

The resource fair starts at 5:00 p.m.  You are invited to set up a table and/or networking space to talk about your organization's social justice mission and activities. Use the online registration form to describe your table space - http://www.peaceandjusticeky.org/Dinner2011.htm. 

Michael Fogler, classical guitarist extraordinaire, will play for us until the vegetarian/vegan dinner is served at 6:00 p.m. (buffet-style).  Food for children aged 12 or under is free; for students or persons with low income, ticket prices are $10.  We ask all others to pay ticket prices on a slide scale, $15-50, according to ability to pay (the event cost will run approximately $20 per person.  Contributions greater than $20 will receive tax receipts and be directed to CKCPJ grassroots programming, peace education efforts, and Voices event series.)  Please make reservations online at http://www.peaceandjusticeky.org/Dinner2011.htm or call Richard Mitchell at 859.327.6277 - we need to know contact information where we can confirm your reservation, the number of people and wehter you are registering children age 12 and under.  Dinner reservations must be made no later than Tuesday, March 1st - otherwise we cannot guarantee there will be food for you.  The Resource Fair and the after-dinner programming is free.

Dr. Catherine Fosl, of the Anne Braden Institute for Social Justice Research, will speak at 7:30 p.m. and lead a discussion afterward.  Fosl is a historian and the author of several publications, including Subversive Southerner: Anne Braden and the Struggle for Racial Justice in the Cold War South. Her topic for the evening's discussion with us is "Beyond the Oppression Olympics: Toward an Intersectional Politics for the 21st Century." Fosl explains: "In the 1980s, U.S. justice struggles were held back by internal divisions and even competition over which 'ism' (racism, sexism, militarism, etc.) should take priority. I'll outline that history and use a few recent local examples to discuss its transformation into more effective coalition-building and ways of thinking about different systems of oppression more synergistically or intersectionally." Our keynote speaker is Professor John Stempel, Senior Professor at the University of Kentucky Patterson School of Diplomacy and International Commerce.  He will give a talk entitled “Using Religion in Peace & Conflict.” In addition TIABG will present the 2010 Faith and Freedom Award to Dr. Ihsan Bagby, Associate Professor of Islamic Studies at the University of Kentucky. The Faith and Freedom Award is given in recognition of steadfast devotion to the promotion of religious understanding between peoples of different faith.

About John Stempel

Dr. Stempel spent 4 years at the U.S. Embassy in Tehran, Iran, among many postings during a 24 year career with the U.S. Foreign Service, after which he came to the Patterson School as Associate Director in 1988. He served as Director from 1993 to 2003. He has consulted on the Middle East for various media, and is a member of the New York Council on Foreign Relations. He received his A.B. from Princeton and an M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of California at Berkeley. He is the author of Inside the Iranian Revolution, now in a second edition, and Common Sense and Foreign Policy, published in 2008.

About Ihsan Bagby

Dr. Bagby has been active in both local and national Islamic and interfaith organizations, and was influential in the formation of The Interfaith Alliance of the Bluegrass. Recently elected to the Majlis of the Islamic Society of North America, he is also a Fellow with the Institute for Social Policy and Understanding, in Detroit, and on the Advisory Board of the Hartford Institute for Religious Research, Hartford Seminary. Dr. Bagby holds a PhD. in Near Eastern Studies from the University of Michigan (1985).

About Dinner

Dinner will be catered by Sav’s Grill and West African Cuisine, serving Mafen vegetarian sauce over wheat couscous, Peanut chicken over rice, and Tilapia vegetable stew over rice. Entertainment will be provided by Sogo Drums.

DETAILS:

The third annual resource fair will provide information, referrals, and resource materials related to issues facing the homeless, marginally housed and veteran populations. These issues include housing, shelter, feeding programs, medical and mental health services.

 

Last year, 250 people participated and dozens of providers attended. The event was initiated during our 2008 25th anniversary celebrations by board member Billie Mallory, who is requesting assistance to help serve Council-sponsored coffee to the participants and lunch to the resource providers.

 

Volunteers are needed to help serve at the following shifts: 9-11, 11-1, 1-3. Contact Billie Mallory at mallory.billie @yahoo.com or call 859.285.5211 to let her know when you can help.

My Dear Disco, a band based in Ann-Arbor, Mich., will come to the main stage at 5 p.m. The group's MySpace profile, at www.myspace.com/mydeardisco , describes its debut recording, DanceThink LP, as a fusion of electro-pop, funk, rock and techno.

Other acts throughout the day include Spooky Os, 8-Inch Betsy, Critical Impact Cloggers and Lexington's own March Madness Marching Band.

Miscellaneous fun stuff: There will be a dunking booth and the final of the Pride Festival Idol. Contestants, who competed for a spot in the singing competition earlier this year, will croon their favorites for a chance at the crown.
