About Fistula
Click here to learn about the tragedy of fistula at the Fistula Foundation website. A fistula is simply a hole between an internal organ and the outside world that should not exist. There are two primary causes of fistula in women in developing countries: childbirth, causing obstetric fistula and sexual violence, causing traumatic fistula. The latter is often the result of sexual abuse during war.
According to the World Health Organization approximately 2 million women have untreated fistula and approximately 100,000 women develop fistula each year. The fistula victims are mostly women in their teens or early twenties. Fistula is preventable and treatable, if these women had access to medical care. While mourning the loss of their unborn babies, these women are often abandoned by their husbands and ostracized by their communities because of their inability to have children. We can help bring their lives back to normal by sponsoring for their surgeries. A fistula surgery is only $450. Just that amount can literally change a woman’s life and future.
Our goal is to raise awareness as well as raise support to pay for 4 (four) fistula surgeries. We would like to sponsor one woman in each of the four countries where Fistula hospitals are found (Ethiopia, Democratic Republic of Congo, Angola and Afghanistan). 100% of our proceeds will go to the Fistula Foundation.
