DETAILS:

The speaker will be Dr. Abeer Al-Ghananeem. Dr Abeer will speak on "Islam: Religion of Peace and Moderation" Dr Bagby, originally scheduled to speak, was called out of town, and Dr. Abeer agreed to speak on the positive note Islam offers to violence.

Abeer Al-Ghananeem is an Associate Professor at the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences, College of Pharmacy, University of Kentucky and Vice-President for Scientific Affairs at US World Meds, a Louisville based pharmaceutical company. She is also an adjunct faculty at Sullivan University College of Pharmacy. Dr. Al-Ghananeem is engaged in several innovative projects that connects science with global health and poverty.

Dr. Al-Ghananeem is a community activist in the areas of civic education, coalition building, media outreach, and civil and human rights protection. She has lectured on health care, interfaith, and diversity subjects. She has served in several local and national committees and organizations.

After the formal program, we will have our traditional pot-luck luncheon where we can continue our discussions over a meal.  Please bring a dish, drinks, breads, or deserts. Bring an interested friend.

KRM is celebrating World Refugee Day at Woodland Park on June 19th from 12:00 pm to 3:30 pm. There will be food, music, art, games and people from all over the world. Friends of KRM are invited to attend and celebrate. Guests are encouraged to bring a small dish of food and chairs.

The speaker will be Dale Walker, a long-time CMD member.

Dale Walker has lived in the Lexington area for 10 years. He is an adjunct/affiliate faculty member at Asbury Theological Seminary in Wilmore. He teaches courses on Islam and also on language and culture. Before coming to Kentucky he was a teacher in Indonesia for some 30 years.

Dale Walker will base his presentation on the attached paper (click here) by Musafir "A Christian Reading of Koran". The discussion following his presentation will encompass a wide range of topics, from religious approaches to current issues, seeking common ground in aspects of each faith, but also exploring areas where Christians and Muslims each have distinct differences, as we try to gain understanding of one another. The CMD discussions in March and April will be concerned with Scripture, specifically how Christians and Muslims view the Qur'an. Dale Walker in his presentation will be asking how Christians could read the Qur'an with more understanding.

Bring a dish and an interested friend and attend our potluck luncheon at 12 Noon.

Professor Formisano's recent book (2008) is entitled "For the People: American Populist Movements from the Revolution to the 1850's". A recent article he published was entitled "Populist currents in the 2008 Presidential campaign" He frequently writes articles for the Lexington Herald Leader.

Following Dr. Formisano's 30-minute talk, there will be ample time for discussion of how the decision might affect us morally and ethically - as individuals and as a nation.

Please join this lively and growing group as we explore this important issue.

Eleven Kentucky peace groups, environmental organizations, and faith organizations are sponsoring a a three-day "Walk to Stop Mountain Top Removal."  The march's final leg is to the capitol building, where marchers will join KFTC's "I Love Mountains Day" rally.  After the rally, they will join other rally attendees to lobby their representatives against Mountain Top Removal and for the Stream Saver Bill. 

The public is invited to join us Monday evening for a potluck supper at Lexington's Quaker Meetinghouse.  We will share with the community "why we walk."

Some of the walkers will spend the night at the churches.

Our topic is the "Islamic Economic System", known as Islamic IQTISAD meaning "to adopt a middle economic course". We will have two excellent spreakers; Dr. Vulcan, Assistant Professor of Economics, and Dr. G. R Erfani, Program Director and Professor of Economics. Both speakers are from Transylvania University here in Lexington.

Dr Vulcan will outline the characteristics of Islamic Economic System, and present an analysis of how a just and a sound banking system can perfectly operate (e.g without utilizing interest as a mechanism for allocating financial resources).

Dr. G. R. Erfani, will speak on some aspects of Islamic finance, focusing on Islamic Mutual Funds and Ethical Investing.

Muslim contributions to economics, which have been ignored throughout the past centuries, will be explained.

The speakers will show how the Islamic Economic System brings about a just social system (social security and social stability) thus preventing the possibility of recurring financial melt-downs. This is a timely topic for our present US financial malaise.

Two books by Professor-Emeritus Chalmers Johnson retired from the University of California System are pertinent to our Dialogue Discussion: Nemesis and The Sorrows of Empire.  Click here to read an excellent Book Review of these two books.  A few minutes reading this review will give you an excellent context for our Saturday discussion.

At 10 am we will have an all-faith community Thanksgiving Service where members of our group can contribute if they wish with a frief inspirational prayer or thought of thanksgiving. We hope to have Christians, Muslims and members of other faith traditions participating in this community thanksgiving service.

At 11 am we will sit down to an Hilal Thanksgiving Turkey dinner. Carolyn Holmes will be providing the turkey, gravy and stuffing. We are asking our guests to provide trimmings – such as side dishes, vegetables, drinks, rolls, and desserts. If you have questions about what to bring call Carolyn Holmes at 277-3004.

Every year thousands of Americans, all over the country, sit down to a traditional Thanksgiving feast without the turkey at an event sponsored by the non-profit group, EarthSave International. The common theme is a meatless celebration of the fall harvest and education about the impacts of food choices. Today, more than ever, people are recognizing the connection between diet, disease and the environment.

In Lexington we’re celebrating with a Potluck and Silent Auction. The community is invited to bring a vegan dish (no meat, dairy, eggs, or animal products). Additionally, Lexington restaurant chefs are donating such delectable dishes as Veggie Succotash & Rice, West African Peanut Stew, Vegan Lasagna, and other treats.

Our speaker will be Victoria Moran (click here to learn more about Moran).  Moran is the author of ten books, and a motivational speaker specializing in inspiration, wellness, and personal growth. Victoria's latest book is "Living A Charmed Life."  Her other titles includes "Fat, Broke, & Lonely No More," "Younger By The Day," "Fit From Within...Lit from Within," "Shelter for the Spirit," and "Creating a Charmed Life."

Moran's articles have appeared in publications including Ladies' Home Journal, Woman's Day, Body & Soul, Weight Watchers Magazine, Natural Health, and Yoga Journal. She has been a guest on TV and radio programs including two appearances on Oprah! A native of Kansas City, Missouri and an adopted New Yorker. Victoria is married to an attorney and writer.
