Kentucky is one of the two most difficult states for a former felon to get their voting rights back in. 186,000 Kentuckians can’t vote because of these laws – including 1 in 4 African Americans.

We think that after someone has served their time, they should be given back their right to vote – because that’s the fair thing to do and because it make’s Kentucky’s Democracy stronger.

A New “Must-See” Film About Mountain Top Removal, Deep Down tells the story of the human impact of our voracious appetite for energy through the lens of a town deep in the Appalachian mountains of eastern Kentucky. Featuring Beverly May and Terry Ratliff, the film tells the story of how they grew up like kin on opposite sides of a mountain ridge in eastern Kentucky.  Click here to go the the film's website.

This event, focusing on social justice, is part of Kentucky's celebration of United Nations Day.  Prior to the classic 1979 Oscar-winning film about a union hero, Crystal Lee Sutton, the Reel World String Band will get us in the mood with a rousing set of Union songs. 

The following is from Betsy Taylor's review (click here to see the entire review) that appeared in the October 21 issue of the North of Center weekly newspaper:

"On September 11, Crystal Lee Sutton died from brain cancer at age 68. She faced her death with the same fighting spirit that blazes out of Norma Rae (1979), the film based on her life. Denied possibly life saving treatments for two months after her diagnosis, Sutton had to battle illness and an insurance corporation simultaneously. In a June 2008 interview with the Burlington Times-News, reporter Handgraaf observed that Sutton saw this as “another example of abusing the working poor.” “It is almost,” she said, “like...committing murder”.

Central Kentucky gets a chance to honor Sutton's generous, valiant spirit at a public celebration at the Kentucky Theatre on November 3. At 6:30, the Reel World String Band will kick things off with a rousing set of labor and justice music, followed by the film Norma Rae. I think Crystal Lee Sutton would like this event. Organized by the Kentucky Division of the United Nations Association, it aims to gather together all sorts of people and justice struggles—labor, health reform, racial and gender justice."

Anne Feeney Based in Pittsburgh, PA, Anne Feeney is the granddaughter of an intrepid mineworkers' organizer, who also used music to carry the message of solidarity to working people. After two decades of community activism and regional performances at rallies, Anne took her message on the road. Since 1991 Anne has traveled to the frontlines in 42 states, as well as Canada, Mexico, Denmark, Ireland and Sweden.

Her anthem "Have You Been to Jail for Justice?"has been performed by activists everywhere, including Peter, Paul and Mary. Dubbed the "minister of culture" to the movements for economic and social justice and human rights, Anne is "the best labor singer in North America" according to Utah Phillips. In 2005, Anne received the Joe Hill Award from the Labor Heritage Foundation in Washington, DC. Past recipients include Cesar Chavez, Pete Seeger, Faith Petric and Hazel Dickens. Her critically acclaimed recordings are widely available.

Proceeds will support the work of Kentuckians for Single Payer Health Care, Kentuckians for the Commonwealth.  Suggested contribution is $5 to $30 depending on your ability to pay.

We have a winter home. Through the winter we will Drum every Sunday at 208W Third St. Lexington. The space is the newly started Urban Action Center (UAC). I'm hoping that this space can be used as a home for many "New Morning" activities.

On a political note, It as way cool that Obama was elected. But the work still needs to go on. These times reminds me when New Morning Coffeehouse first opened.  We opened it to keep people from going to sleep.  We cannot go back to sleep,,,There are TWO wars going on,,,,The economy is in the pooper. King Coal still rules Frankfort...and the Webb Brothers are still in Lexington.

About the artists:

George Ella and Steve Lyon

Two local much-beloved authors who are faithfully and deeply committed to peace and social justice. George Ella first sang at an anti-war rally in 1967 at Centre College. Her poems on peace enrich the local interfaith peace vigil and have been frequently reproduced in support of the cause.  Steve, a versatile and innovative musician, is a composer, songwriter, and performer.

Alma Gitana

Alma Gitana [Gypsy Soul] is the brain child of lead singer and percussionist Stuart Waldner. Stuart, along with compadres Bob Elliott and Duane Corn, formed Alma Gitana to share their unique style of flamenco fusion with audiences throughout the region. Reel World String Band

Monumentally influenced by traditional and old-time music with a touch of country, swing, blues, and jazz, Reel World's soulful songwriting and instrumental virtuosity make for American roots music with a rare fire and authenticity.
