DETAILS:

Our keynote speaker is Professor John Stempel, Senior Professor at the University of Kentucky Patterson School of Diplomacy and International Commerce.  He will give a talk entitled “Using Religion in Peace & Conflict.” In addition TIABG will present the 2010 Faith and Freedom Award to Dr. Ihsan Bagby, Associate Professor of Islamic Studies at the University of Kentucky. The Faith and Freedom Award is given in recognition of steadfast devotion to the promotion of religious understanding between peoples of different faith.

About John Stempel

Dr. Stempel spent 4 years at the U.S. Embassy in Tehran, Iran, among many postings during a 24 year career with the U.S. Foreign Service, after which he came to the Patterson School as Associate Director in 1988. He served as Director from 1993 to 2003. He has consulted on the Middle East for various media, and is a member of the New York Council on Foreign Relations. He received his A.B. from Princeton and an M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of California at Berkeley. He is the author of Inside the Iranian Revolution, now in a second edition, and Common Sense and Foreign Policy, published in 2008.

About Ihsan Bagby

Dr. Bagby has been active in both local and national Islamic and interfaith organizations, and was influential in the formation of The Interfaith Alliance of the Bluegrass. Recently elected to the Majlis of the Islamic Society of North America, he is also a Fellow with the Institute for Social Policy and Understanding, in Detroit, and on the Advisory Board of the Hartford Institute for Religious Research, Hartford Seminary. Dr. Bagby holds a PhD. in Near Eastern Studies from the University of Michigan (1985).

About Dinner

Dinner will be catered by Sav’s Grill and West African Cuisine, serving Mafen vegetarian sauce over wheat couscous, Peanut chicken over rice, and Tilapia vegetable stew over rice. Entertainment will be provided by Sogo Drums.

Ms. Weston, former Executive Director of the Kentucky Association of School Councils, is an independent consultant working on Kentucky education issues. Student achievement, testing policies, and education funding are the main subjects of her recent work, including projects for the Prichard Committee for Academic Excellence, the Council for Better Education, the Kentucky Association of School Councils, the Partnership at New Cities, and the Campaign for Educational Equity. She also analyzes statewide education issues as the primary author of the Prichard Blog ( www.prichblog.blogspot.com ) .  Participants will learn about recently adopted learning standards and efforts to help Kentucky students acquire knowledge and skills needed o be college and work-ready.

The Commemorative Program

The program features John Twitchell, who is vice president of generation and transmission for East Kentucky Power Cooperative which is a member of the UK Center for Applied Research consortium seeking cost-effective technologies to reduce and manage carbon dioxide emissions from coal fired plants; and Jonathan Miller, the state Finance and Administration Cabinet secretary. Miller works with the Clean Energy Corps, a coalition of public and private sector partners promoting energy-efficient homes, growth of ‘green collar” jobs and financing for green construction and renovation.
