At 8 p.m. Tuesday President Obama is expected to announce that he intends to send 30,000 additional U.S. troops to fight in Afghanistan. Expansion of the war in Afghanistan is outrageous: it will cost us billions of dollars that are sorely needed for other purposes, will be bloody both for our troops and for Afghani civilians, and, most sadly, its continuation will only make the situation worse. After eight years of occupation and war in support of a corrupt government, many Afghanis view the U.S. as just one more foreign power seeking to conquer their land. Our very presence recruits Afghanis to the opposition.
We call for a strategy to defeat terrorism based on multi-national intelligence and police work and international aid to build and rebuild Afghanistan's infrastructure, especially schools. Since military force is a self-defeating strategy for achieving our nation's goals in Afghanistan, we call on a withdrawal of all U.S. and allied military forces as soon as safely possible.
