The Carnegie Center will celebrate the International Day of Peace with a large array of activities for children of all ages.  See below for more about the International Day of Peace.

Join the worldwide effort to promote peace at the Center’s first Family Fun Night of the season. Enjoy games, activities, dinner and prizes for the entire family. Featuring the Bluegrass Literacy’s Puppets for Peace project demonstration puppets and craft activities. Event is free and open to all, but pre- registration is required so organizers have accurate counts to allow for dinner arrangements. Phone 859. 254.4175.

AND FOR TEENS aged 13-18: International Day of Peace at the Carnegie Center—Teen Topix Peace Poetry with local poet and publisher Katerina Stoykova-Klemer. Explore and write poetry with peace in mind. After class, teens can join the Family Fun and Learning Night participants for free dinner and a raffle. This feature is offered in partnership with the Council. Free and open to all teens, but pre-registration is required: Phone 859.254.4175. Note: the Center welcomes volunteers to accompany the children in crafts and activities at its Family Fun Nights—if you’re looking for a way to mark the International Day of Peace with some of the most hopeful members of our community, call 859.254.4175 and let the Center know you will assist.

The International Day of Peace was established by the UN General Assembly in 1981 for “commemorating and strengthening the ideals of peace within and among all nations and people.” Twenty years later, the General Assembly decided that 21 September would be observed annually as a “day of global ceasefire and non-violence" and invited all Member States, organizations and individuals to commemorate the day, including through education and public awareness, and to cooperate with the United Nations in the establishment of a global ceasefire.  Click here to find out more about the International Day of Peace.

Downtown Lexington is ALIVE and kicking especially on G-Hop nights. Join us Friday night for the last Gallery Hop of 2009 with a guided tour and stroll down the re-emerging Third Street entertainment and arts district. The guided tours will last about 1 hour and allow everyone time to enjoy many of the other great exhibits ready to satisfy the hunger of your eyes for visually delicious and spicy art.

Our HOBY Hop Down 3rd Street Tours will begin at no betta place than the bodacious Pat Gerhard-owned and painted Third Street Stuff (257 N. Lime) and will end at the Isaac Murphy Memorial Art Garden( 3rd & Midland). This HOBY Down 3rd St. Tours will be guided by eco-activist, jim embry.

More than 180 youth came to Lexington June 6 for the second rendition of "Artists & Youth Create Community Together”, the community service project conspired by Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership(HOBY), The Knight Foundation and Sustainable Communities Network. These young folks who came from all around Kentucky to Lexington as part of HOBY teamed with local artists for this outstanding community art service project.

This year’s theme was Eastend neighborhood history, sustainability and sacred Earth connections. Eleven(11) of these 18 beautiful and inspiring murals are now located along 3rd St and have created lots of conversation and questions. What is the meaning of 54....what is the Trail of Tears...when will Eastend be emancipated?...are a few of the David Chappelle-type questions that will be answered Friday night.

We will visit all 11 murals and other stops along the Tour will include the London Ferrel Community Garden, the funkadelic Artsy Bus Stop with G. Bibbs metal sculpture, the Lyric Theatre growing from ashes and the Isaac Murphy Memorial Art Garden now adorned with a holy-day tree. If you hop down to Al’s Bar Friday or any night check out the other 14 murals from 2008 HOBY that hang on the exterior wall at 758 N Limestone owned by community leader, Marty Clifford.

The HOBY murals shine with radiant colors and sacred symbols...the murals speak of love, harmony and peace...the murals proclaim diversity, respect and environmental health...the murals inspire recycling, new music and eyes on the future. The composition and color of these murals are but a small attempt to reflect our ONENESS...our connection with the Earth Community...our inter-dependence....our need to develop sustainable communities. EveryONE is invited to come by and see the murals....feel the inspiration...listen to the murals...let them speak to you.....feel the resonance within you...enjoy their rhythms and colorful feast.....may your eyes dance and dine as did ours.

10/24 PeaceMeal Gardens: Pumpkin Festival

This event is free and the public is cordially welcome.

DETAILS:

This pumpkin festival is intended as a fun, end-of-season garden event.  Children and a Children and adults are welcome to paint a pumpkin from the patch, eat s’mores heated over a bonfire, learn about natural dyes, swap seed, and just enjoy getting being out in the country on an autumn day.  Gourds and pumpkins will be for sale.

The concept of the BCTC PeaceMeal Gardens is to encourage the community and BCTC students to develop healthy associations with local food production and become concretely involved in the process. The many participants in this large, multi-faceted garden include allotment gardeners, Food Not Bombs, the Lexington Free Store, Catholic Action Center, and the BCTC Market Garden.

Directions: turn left onto Opportunity Way from Leestown Rd—heading west—and turn right onto Parking Lot A.  Across the parking lot you will meet a little gravel road; stay on it for about 100 yards. When you see the clearing, the garden is on the right.

The Carnegie Center will celebrate the International Day of Peace with a large array of activities for children of all ages.  See below for more about the International Day of Peace.

• Painting a “Peace Pole” - People across the globe participate in this activity. It is supposed to be planted outside to show that we represent Peace, however we cannot put it outside. If you check out the International Day of Peace website, there is a link to this activity. There are great pictures from all over the world! The families will be able to put their mark on the pole with paint however they wish.

• Peace Pictionary – this will be a simple, fun way for the parents and kids to interact with one another. Actually, you could help with this! I will have a white board and I was planning on making about 15 cards with different peace words. So far the words I have that children and families could draw are: Hand shake, hug, love, world peace, friend, dove, earth, peace treaty…

• Peace Poetry – This will be a community poem. I will have strips of colored paper cut and the parents/kids and add a line to the community piece.

• Community Mural – we will have a large canvas that everyone can paint and add their peaceful remarks, pictures, etc.

• The Wall of Peace – This is a booth where children/parents can write a paragraph, draw a picture, etc. regarding what peace means to them. They will then post their thoughts/art on the wall. Then when everyone is eating we will have a sort of gallery of Peace to read, look at.

• Pinwheels for Peace – the children will write their feelings on the back of paper about war, peace, tolerance, etc. Then they turn the page and decorate the front. They will trace the pinwheel and cut and fold, then pin it to the eraser of a pencil.

• Origami Doves – we will have white origami paper and have instructions for folding the dove.

• Peace Bracelets – the kids will have multi-colored string and they can braid the string and then we will have peace sign and dove charms to add to it.

• Theatre area – I am planning on searching youtube for peaceful protests, MLK speech, Peace demonstrations, etc. I would hope to have 30 mins of content. Maybe you could help me come up with videos or ideas for this.

• Community hand wreath – the families can trace their hands on construction paper and then each hand will be added to the circle so that we have a community wreath!

• Tie dye squares – the kids will tie dye handkerchiefs!
